Zombie ground hog?

by Pieter ~ January 22nd, 2007. Filed under: Firearms.

An often overlooked threat today is the ground hog.
This menace is increased when combined with the newest
wave of terrorism, Zombies.
For real? NO….

But I did trick out one hell of a paper puncher.
Basically, I wanted a brake action single shot, “varmint” rifle.
Good news is the rifle was pretty cheap, I had the scope
and .223 is plentiful.
The bad news is with a one in twelve twist, she’s picky about her diet.

At around five pounds, carrying around and quickly shouldering this little
baby is no problem.

For once the bi-pod is not just added wieght.
Steady shots out to 200 plus yards.

There’s been several rifles I’ve put the stock cover (extra rounds) on,
it’s nice to brake an action and have a round a few inches away.

Now that is a genuinely nice piece of kit. Very shiny indeed.

1/12 eh? What do you find she likes the best?

I’ve never been uber-conversant with the twist rates, but my AR has a 1/7, and seems just fine with 55gr ammo (thankfully the barrel is ACTUALLY 5.56 NATO, so either .223Rem or 556×45mm works) although I’ve experimented with a few others just to see what the big deal was, and still haven’t noticed a huge difference (mind you, at 100 yards I suppose the difference could be as minor as good day/bad day shooting.

Some minor questions, where did you pick her up? What was the cost (pre-scope etc) approx?

Thanks to a computer hick-up, I have to type this all in again.
OK, so we picked the Rossi up at academy sports for around $150.
It came with a 4x scope and weaver base on it, but, I wanted a higher
mag, and variable is all ways nice.
A 4x – 24x sits on it now, and at any distance over 100 yards, my old eyes need
all the help I can get finding holes.
As far as twist rates, I’ll give you the ten cent answer.
An object is stabilized in flight by spin, the faster the spin, the more stable it becomes.
This also means the heavier the projectile can be and still be stable.
Standard twist for a .223 is around one in ten.
So standard ammo (55gr) is a perfect match.
If you have a faster twist, you can still shoot lighter ammo and not loss any performance,
but, now you have the option of shooting heavier stuff.
Yours in a one in seven, that’s a pretty fast twist, so, there are ammo choices
provided to you that reach into the 70gr range.
You have a USGI style weapon, kind of meant for heavy ball.
Mine is a lazy twist so I have to shoot 50gr or lighter, or my groups open up alot.
Why would they a slow twist? Muzzle speed is dissipated in spinning the round, or so I’ve heard.
Not that putting a hotter round would just make up for that.
Right now I shoot a hot loaded ballistic, 45g varmint round made by winchester.
    Hoped that helped.

Ok, I knew more than I was letting on, but thanks for the primer on twist rates none the less. I think you wen over ten cents with that answer though.

What sort of info are ya looking for?
I can tell you that the Rossi likes the lighter rounds.
If you reload, keeping the weight down in the 45gr range will
    get you the best results.
As far as accuracy, you can expect right around 1 MOA.
It’s not uncommon to run a half-dollar (Spread) for five rounds.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I answer what I can.
